PRICES
Prices, during the first 6 months of the year, have eased downwards despite strong demand from the UK economy. There are signs that scrap prices in Turkey and in Europe may increase at the beginning of September and this will encourage mills to increase prices. Steel mills generally are having a torrid time, UK mills are suffering because of the strength of the pound against the euro and mills further afield are being hit by the unrest in Ukraine, Syria, Gaza and Iraq. We are certainly watching very closely all international movements and if you need more up to date information please contact our sales department on 01845 528200.
SUPPLY
Supply is in balance but some sizes could be affected due to summer closures.
TOMRODS LTD
We are delighted to confirm that we are now fully accredited with our CE marking FPC accreditation. We are one of the very few UK stockists that can provide this accreditation and that can offer all the statutory elements from our 9 acre site in Thirsk. We believe it is very important that we can offer control and traceability from a single site. On a trading front I believe we are in the same position as most, volumes good but profits still poor.
BUSINESS GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE
We are investing heavily in our Thirsk site and capital expenditure is high on our agenda. We have recently successfully applied for grant from the York/North Yorkshire/East Riding Regional Growth Fund. This only started in March this year and they are actively looking for businesses who are investing in the future. Our contact Susan McColl asked if we knew of any other businesses that might benefit from a regional grant; you can receive a grant up to 20% of any improvements or capital expenditure if you have less than 50 employees.
