Steel Bulletin News January 2014
January 9, 2014
Prices are relatively stable at present despite better economic news filtering through. Mills are trying to move prices forward but at present it is two steps forward and then two back. Merchant bar prices were increased from January 1st by another £15/t and merchant bars are now selling at higher rates per tonne than heavy sections and hollow sections. Heavy section prices are also moving forward but need stronger demand to push these higher. Hollow section prices remain static and have not been influenced by the movements in other product groups. As an overview prices are out of balance with merchant bars leading the way, but on a positive front most indicators are pointing prices forwards and not backwards. If you need more up to date information please contact our sales department on 01845 528200.
Supply is in balance but mill merchant bar stocks are very low and we are now having to place all orders from forward rollings.
Another year over, it certainly went very quickly and we are now half way through January 2014. Tomrods had a record year in 2013 and sold more steel than ever before beating 2007 levels, but only just. One of the reasons that we were so successful is due to a wonderful team effort and the hard work put in by our works and transport giving our customers a reliable and quality service that has been matched by the sterling efforts of our young and enthusiastic sales force. On this front we are delighted to welcome Gavin Scaife to our sales team, he has settled in well and is learning quickly in the busy environment of the Sales Office and Mike Terry who is ably assisting Jacek in our Purchasing Department. We are looking forward to the challenges of 2014 and we are encouraged by the general view that all our customers are busy. May I conclude by thanking everyone for their support supplying delivery plans/safe offloading details, this is part of a HSE directive which enables us to plan your deliveries and unload your steel safely and more efficiently. A very happy, healthy and prosperous new year to us all.
