Steel Business Briefing – Thursday, 22 April 2004

North-Yorkshire based stockholders Tomrods is celebrating 30 years of business. John Thompson, who started out in his spare bedroom in Harrogate, Yorkshire, established the company in 1973. John had to borrow £50 to get started, he tells Steel Business Briefing; his overheads were a total of £7 a month.

The Company’s first order and the start of his success was an order for 4.5T of plate.  It was not long before John and his father-in-law moved out of the spare room and into offices close by.  In their first year of trading, the company turned over £105,000.

Several moves and years later, John’s turnover is in excess of £8m.  He now has two sites, one in Knaresborough, with the head office and a 20,000 sq.m warehouse attached.  The other one – of 60,000 sq.m – is in Marston Moor, Wetherby.  The company now has 35 employees.  The company distributes a wide range of long and strip mill products.
