Tomrods Bed of Steel!
June 17, 2015
The Great Knaresborough Bed Race, if you don’t already know is an annual charity event but with a difference: it is part fancy dress pageant and part punishing time trial over a 2.4 mile course, ending with a swim through the icy waters of the River Nidd!
Tomrods was only too pleased to provide a necessary bed made of steel of course to several Sixth Form students from Ashville College in Harrogate whose goal was to enter the race this year in order to raise supporting funds for Open Arms Malawi – a charity that believes that every child has the right to life, survival and development. Open Arms Malawi provides medical attention, shelter, food and love to some of Malawi’s orphaned and abandoned children and works to ensure that the children in their care have the chance to grow up with the love of a family and the security of a home.
The Ashville Sixth Form students aka ‘Tomrods Men of Steel’ seen in the image above taken after the race will all be visiting Malawi later on in the summer to carry out some further valuable volunteer charity work there. The team from left to right Jeremy Butterfield, George Thompson, Gabby Grogan, Jake Brown, Max Ellacott, Will Smith & Tom Bailey were really delighted to achieve a highly respectable race time of 17 minutes and 37 seconds, which put them in position 27/90 but they were even more pleased to have successfully raised £4922 for Open Arms Malawi in the process.
The ‘Tomrods Men of Steel’ having made their bed will no doubt have one of them (a rule) lying in it again next year for the same great worthy cause!
